OOC: Set a little after Serenity the movie.
Mal: Should be about a day’s ride to get you back to your girls.
Inara: Right.
Mal: Ready to get off this heap, back to civilized life?
Inara: I uhh… I don’t know.
Mal: Good answer.

“Can walk outta here anytime you want, ‘Nara.” Mal answered as he walked back onto Serenity from the docks. Pressing the intercom, he spoke into the speaker. “River? Ready for take off.”
Pulling the embroidered shawl tighter around her, Inara followed Mal in the cargo bay as he went about closing up the ship. “You think that I don’t know that, Mal? I just think that it would be nice for us to hit a planet further into the Core where there might be a chance of purchasing some descent incense and tea.”
Mal shook his head, walking to the weapons cabinet and restocking bullet cartridges in his pistol and holster. “Complainin’ about our whereabouts and the jobs we take’ll get you nowhere. You know that.”
“I’m not complaining. I know that we need to lie low for a bit after what happened. I wouldn’t dream of putting us in unnecessary danger.”
“Really?” Mal shut the cabinet and turned to face Inara. “Cause sounds to me like that’s just what you’re tryin’ to do. Ain’t a good thing that comes outta the Core, ‘Nara. You know that.”
There was a distinct pause in the back and forth banter before Inara whispered. “I came from the Core.”
Swallowing hard, Mal’s features smoothed out as he tilted his head. “You know what I meant.” He exhaled a slow breath, gauging his words a little more carefully. “’Less we got a job there, I don’t wanna go there. Gets us nothin’ but trouble.”
The sudden sincerity in his voice threw Inara off of the tightrope that she usually walked around Malcolm Reynolds. That flicker of uncertainty didn’t go unnoticed. He furrowed his brow, not sure what to do when Inara looked so… normal.
He stepped forward just as he felt the light lift that signaled River’s taking Serenity up from the world. One palm cupped her cheek, fingers sliding into her hair as his lips caught hers in a heady kiss, the first one that he would remember although she claimed there had been another one that he hadn’t been awake for. When her lips parted beneath his, he guided her back until her back hit a metal wall.
Breathing was overrated in comparison to the kiss. He never wanted this to happen. But he had craved it from that first day they had met.
Mal: Well, I’ll be sure and take all of that into consideration when I review the applications.
Inara: Don’t be ridiculous. You’re going to rent this shuttle to me.
Mal: Am I?
Inara: Yes. And for one quarter less than your asking price.
Mal: That a fact?
Inara: It is.
Mal: And you figure you’ll be getting’ this discount… why exactly?
Inara: You want me. You want me on your ship.
Mal: Do I?
Inara: Yes.
- Firefly, Out of Gas
The kiss broke and he took in a deep breath in tandem with her. Neither of them spoke. Neither of them knew what to say. He couldn’t quit looking at her, swollen lips and her chest heaving in their plea for air. She started to turn away and Mal grabbed her wrist a silent request for her to stay, for this moment not to be broken.
“That didn’t happen.”
Mal stared at her, unsure that he heard her right for a moment. But she had said it and he couldn’t blame her. She was a Companion, after all. He was a petty thief. He let go of her wrist and nodded, walking away before he lost his temper. This moment was laced with too much vulnerable for him to lose his temper. “Nothin’ happened.”
She watched him leave, touching her fingertips to her lips as she mouthed the words. “It was nothing.” Terrifying how nothing could feel so much like something… something they both wanted but weren’t sure they could have.
