41.5 – Consequence (28.3)
Previous: Part 1

PART TWO

Mal hated this room. It was actually a cell. He couldn’t remember how long it had been since he had been somewhere that he couldn’t see the sky. This room had no windows and it drove him crazy, making him even more irritated than he already was. He paced the room back and forth like a caged animal whose only goal in life was to be free. There were four walls, a floor and a ceiling. Each surface looked the same. Even the door blended in with the walls and had no window to look out into the hallway. The light in the corner of the room had seen better days. It only cast a dim glow on the room, barely enough to see in.

His hands were still cuffed behind his back leaving him with nothing that he could do but wait, not that he hadn’t tried. With his back to the wall where the door was he had felt around for a chamber that might contain a way to override the lock. The search had left him empty handed.

40.4 – What are the odds?
Zoe and Jayne are from my own head and not pertaining to any other muses.

PART ONE

Mal smirked lightly as he walked through the streets to the rendezvous point. He was flanked by Zoe on one side and Jayne on the other as was his usual state when on land preparing for a job. “We’re in, we find out what the job is and we’re out. No time for dilly-dallyin’ Jayne.”

“But Mal, these camps got some good weapons at half the coin of what you’d find ‘em for in other places.” Jayne protested. “Least we can do is check ‘em out.”

Zoe’s grin was barely noticeable as she shook her head. “Irony here’s that you’re askin’ the Captain to shop. Usually it’s Kaylee and Inara that’s wantin’ such things.”

Jayne glared at Zoe. “Ain’t askin’ to shop for fooferah and tea. Want a new gun and knife.”

39.3 – Burn the midnight oil.
None of the characters mentioned are binding to any muses unless they want it to be.

He had no clue how they were going to do this. He wasn’t Wash. River wasn’t Wash. Kaylee could work wonders from the engine room but still could only do so much without a good pilot. River had proven herself to be pretty damn good, but Mal still wasn’t sure how far ‘pretty damn good’ went.

At the moment, Serenity was spiraling up out of the atmosphere of the border planet where a drop off and payment should have taken place. Hot on their tail was the reason for their leaving without a single coin to their name: Reavers.

Mal’s heart was pounding in his chest, one hand gripping the back of the chair River was sitting in and the other a comm. unit with Kaylee on the other end. The entire ship creaked as if the ship herself were as tense and wound up as its passengers. “Kaylee? Give me somethin’.”

“Somethin’ Cap’n?” Her voice sounded over the speaker.

“Yeah, you know. Anything’s gonna be better’n nothin’ right about now.” Mal continued, not appreciating the silence that he got in return. Immediately he turned to another option. He leaned down over River’s left shoulder. “Listen to me, River girl. Know you’re good enough at pilotin’ this ship. Ever heard of a crazy ivan?”

“No.”

It was slang terminology so he wasn’t surprised that she hadn’t. He spoke into the comm. again. “Kaylee? Need you to tell River how to pull an ivan.”

“What?” The anxiety was present in her voice even in that single question. “Cap’n that’s all about timin’ and knowin’-”

Bizui. Don’t got time for that Kaylee. Either talk her through it or we might as well shoot ourselves down now. Dong ma?” Mal waited until he received an affirmative from his mechanic and then held the comm. out so River could hear. “Do what she says, lil’ Albatross. Need you to do what Kaylee says.”

River nodded stoically and Mal listened as Kaylee stammered over the instructions so that they could attempt to pull off the difficult maneuver. It all happened so quickly. Just a ‘now’ from River and Mal knew that something happened in the engine room. Their course changed immediately and his Serenity sped away from the Reavers leaving a burning fireball of fuel in their wake. Part of him couldn’t believe it. River continued to amaze him just as his entire crew did.

Through the comm. he could hear Jayne, Inara, Zoe and Kaylee whooping and hollering their celebration. Mal just continued to stare at River as she piloted the ship away from the Reavers before they could turn around and follow.

“Crazy Ivan.”

“Yeah. You just file that one away for when we’re needin’ it again. How ‘bout that?” Mal asked, a grin finally playing on his lips once he accepted that they were once again out of the woods. His only reply from the younger girl was a nod and really, that was all he needed. He had just discovered that ‘pretty damn good’ when pretty damn far.

37.2 – The early bird gets the worm
OOC: The only muse used with permission is Inara ([info]only_fell). The rest are not binding to any certain muses from the fandom.

The sounds of laughter lured him as Mal made his way towards the mess hall and closer to the feminine giggles. In the room he found Kaylee, Inara and River huddled in the corner around a large bowl sparsely filled with fruit. They were still riding high on the coin they had made from the latest job in the Core. That coin kept fresh foods on their table.

“What’s this?” Mal asked, eyeing the girls skeptically. “Sounds like there’s some kind of gose goin’ on in here.”

Inara arched a brow and looked up to Mal. “Kaylee was sharing her strawberries with us and regaling us of the way Jayne tried to steal one yesterday.”

The explanation forced a glint of amusement to glaze over Mal’s features. “Jayne? Jayne tried to steal a strawberry.”

“Seems he wanted one real bad, Capt’n” Kaylee answered around a smile.

“Well make sure you keep an eye on ‘em. They’re yours to give and keep as you please.” Mal stepped closer to the table and picked an apple out of the bowl. He tossed it in the air and caught it before starting moving to get some coffee.

His arms stretched above his head, Jayne walked into the room with his mouth agape in a big yawn. He scratched his fingers over his chest and looked in the bowl of fruit, his nose wrinkling. “All that’s left is pears? Don’t like pears.”

“Apple.” River said, pointing in the Captain’s direction.

Mal looked back to Jayne, holding the apple up. “Looks like I beat you to it. Though if you’re real nice Kaylee’s got some strawberries I hear you’ve been eyein’.” He gave the larger man a cat ate the canary grin.

Jayne looked back to Kaylee, casting her an angry glare before he mumbled under his breath and walked out of the room. The three girls erupted in laughter that only died down when Mal walked past them toward the hallway. “Don’t be spendin’ all day playin’ about, Kaylee. Got things that need doin’.”

OOC: Set a little after Serenity the movie.

Mal: Should be about a day’s ride to get you back to your girls.
Inara: Right.
Mal: Ready to get off this heap, back to civilized life?
Inara: I uhh… I don’t know.
Mal: Good answer.
- Serenity

“Can walk outta here anytime you want, ‘Nara.” Mal answered as he walked back onto Serenity from the docks. Pressing the intercom, he spoke into the speaker. “River? Ready for take off.”

Pulling the embroidered shawl tighter around her, Inara followed Mal in the cargo bay as he went about closing up the ship. “You think that I don’t know that, Mal? I just think that it would be nice for us to hit a planet further into the Core where there might be a chance of purchasing some descent incense and tea.”

Mal shook his head, walking to the weapons cabinet and restocking bullet cartridges in his pistol and holster. “Complainin’ about our whereabouts and the jobs we take’ll get you nowhere. You know that.”

“I’m not complaining. I know that we need to lie low for a bit after what happened. I wouldn’t dream of putting us in unnecessary danger.”

“Really?” Mal shut the cabinet and turned to face Inara. “Cause sounds to me like that’s just what you’re tryin’ to do. Ain’t a good thing that comes outta the Core, ‘Nara. You know that.”

There was a distinct pause in the back and forth banter before Inara whispered. “I came from the Core.”

Swallowing hard, Mal’s features smoothed out as he tilted his head. “You know what I meant.” He exhaled a slow breath, gauging his words a little more carefully. “’Less we got a job there, I don’t wanna go there. Gets us nothin’ but trouble.”

The sudden sincerity in his voice threw Inara off of the tightrope that she usually walked around Malcolm Reynolds. That flicker of uncertainty didn’t go unnoticed. He furrowed his brow, not sure what to do when Inara looked so… normal.

He stepped forward just as he felt the light lift that signaled River’s taking Serenity up from the world. One palm cupped her cheek, fingers sliding into her hair as his lips caught hers in a heady kiss, the first one that he would remember although she claimed there had been another one that he hadn’t been awake for. When her lips parted beneath his, he guided her back until her back hit a metal wall.

Breathing was overrated in comparison to the kiss. He never wanted this to happen. But he had craved it from that first day they had met.

Mal: Well, I’ll be sure and take all of that into consideration when I review the applications.
Inara: Don’t be ridiculous. You’re going to rent this shuttle to me.
Mal: Am I?
Inara: Yes. And for one quarter less than your asking price.
Mal: That a fact?
Inara: It is.
Mal: And you figure you’ll be getting’ this discount… why exactly?
Inara: You want me. You want me on your ship.
Mal: Do I?
Inara: Yes.
- Firefly, Out of Gas

The kiss broke and he took in a deep breath in tandem with her. Neither of them spoke. Neither of them knew what to say. He couldn’t quit looking at her, swollen lips and her chest heaving in their plea for air. She started to turn away and Mal grabbed her wrist a silent request for her to stay, for this moment not to be broken.

“That didn’t happen.”

Mal stared at her, unsure that he heard her right for a moment. But she had said it and he couldn’t blame her. She was a Companion, after all. He was a petty thief. He let go of her wrist and nodded, walking away before he lost his temper. This moment was laced with too much vulnerable for him to lose his temper. “Nothin’ happened.”

She watched him leave, touching her fingertips to her lips as she mouthed the words. “It was nothing.” Terrifying how nothing could feel so much like something… something they both wanted but weren’t sure they could have.
